Cairo Governor announces end of first phase of Magra el-Oyoun restoration

Cairo Governor Dr. Ibrahim Saber announced the finalization of the first phase of restoration work on the historic Magra El-Oyoun aqueduct and the adjacent tourist walkway, which extends one kilometer from Sayyeda Aisha Square to Al-Moqattam Hospital.

The restoration is part of a comprehensive plan to revitalize historic Cairo and enhance its visual character. It also aims to turn Magra El-Oyoun and its surrounding area into a global tourist destination by linking the Religious Complex, Magra El-Oyoun, and Al-Bayt mosques while integrating with the adjacent Fustat Hills area.

Governor Saber said that the entire project, extending three kilometers from Al-Moqattam Hospital to the Fom El-Khalig Bridge, is scheduled to be completed by year’s end.

The governor added that the first phase of restoration included removing accumulated waste and encroachments around it, cleaning and scientifically insulating the stone surfaces to protect the monument, opening up the blocked arches, and developing the surrounding area by creating a tourist walkway. This walkway is designed to become a major attraction in the heart of Cairo, turning the site into a global destination while preserving its original heritage value and reviving its historic character.

Moreover, Saber stated that the installation of an advanced lighting system illuminates the site at night without affecting its archaeological value while adding an aesthetic touch. The system includes ground lighting to highlight architectural details and heritage-style decorative columns to light the walkway.

The governor added that all cleaning, maintenance, and restoration work was conducted using approved scientific methods under the full supervision of restoration professionals from the Supreme Council of Antiquities, in coordination with the relevant archaeological inspection department, the Islamic and Coptic Antiquities Sector, and the National Organization for Urban Harmony.
