Egypt’s PM inspects pilot operation of light rail transit system set to operate in March

Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli followed up Saturday on the pilot operation of the light rail transit (LRT) system connecting the capital with new cities in east Cairo, which is scheduled to operate starting March.

Madbouli, Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir, and other state officials toured a number of ongoing transportation projects, including the LRT system, a cabinet statement said.

The LRT multiple-stop line, whose pilot operations started on 12 January, connects El-Salam district in Cairo with the 10th of Ramadan city in Sharqia governorate through the New Administrative Capital (NAC).

The LRT system is scheduled to transfer tens of thousands of passengers daily in east Cairo.

The first phase of the LRT project will connect the new capital with the Adly Mansour station, a central metro interchange station in Cairo on the Cairo-Ismailia desert road. The station is set to include an LRT system, a railway station, a Super Jet bus station and a shuttle bus station.

The second phase extends over 18.5 km and comprises four stations starting from the new capital to a central interchange station linked with the high-speed train line in Ain Sokhna city on the Red Sea coast.

The project comes within the framework of expanding the country's eco-friendly clean transportation network as per President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s directives, Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir said.
