Minister of Local Development Mahmoud Shaarawy and Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal inspected Sunday the Salam Factory for solid waste treatment run by the Egyptian Company for Solid Waste Recycling ECOM under the contract signed between Cairo Cleaning and Beautification Authority and the company.
During his tour, Shaarawi directed to improve the efficiency of waste treatment and recycling process at the factory to prevent the accumulation of daily collected garbage, stressing the need to safely manage the disposal of and transport untreatable residues to the el-Obour Sanitary Landfill.
Moreover, Shaarawi ordered the Waste Management Executive Unit at the Ministry of Local Development to prepare a comprehensive report about the operating mechanism of the Salam Waste Treatment Factory and review the commitments undertaken by the ECOM Company concerning the Rehabilitation and operation of the factory to improve the economic, environment, and social return.
Shaarawi also confirmed that the government is working on improving the process of waste collection and transfer in Cairo and other Egyptian cities to ensure the safety of citizens and protect their health.
For his part, Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal asserted that there is a continuous follow up on the waste collection, transport, recycling, and treatment services provided by Cairo Cleaning and Beautification Authority in Cairo’s North and South areas, EnviroMaster Company in the East area, and Erteqaa company in the West area to prevent waste accumulation in Cairo streets in line with the mega national projects the capital is witnessing during President Sisi’s era.
Abdel Aal, furthermore, pointed out that the Salam Factory is one of two waste recycling plants located in Cairo used to recycle solid waste to provide alternative fuel for coal for cement plants, while the organic material is treated to produce Fertilizer used in agriculture.
Abdel Aal also stressed that the new waste management system receives the attention of Egypt’s political leadership and that all relevant authorities are continually following up on the work of the companies responsible for handling waste collection and disposal in Cairo’s districts. He added that the state provided full support to ensure the success of the new waste management system in the capital.
Additionally, Abdel Aal confirmed that the success criterion of the new system depends on the actual change in the services provided to citizens.
At the end of the tour, Shaarawi and Abdel Aal also inspected the laboratory at the Salam Factory to follow up on the action mechanism and ensure the quality of the alternative fuel produced by the factory.
Shaarawi and Abdel Aal were accompanied by Deputy Cairo Governor Ibrahim saber, Assistant Secretary-General Ibrahim Awad, officials of the Cleaning and Beautification Authority, and a representative of Enviro-Master Waste Recycling Company.
