Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal inspected a model of one of the bike docking stations installed in Tahrir Square in the Downtown area to follow up on the executive procedures to begin the operation of the Cairo Bike Project.
The Cairo Bike Project aims to spread and promote the use of bicycles as an alternative means of transportation in the capital. The project is a collaborative effort between the Cairo governorate and the development partners with the support of the UN Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) and funded by the Swiss Drosos Foundation with technical support and supervision of the Institute for Transport and Development Policy (ITDP).
Furthermore, the governor pointed out that the state strives to encourage citizens to reduce the use of private cars to reduce congestion and air pollution by providing an alternative transportation mode, adding that Cairo is keen to benefit from international experiences in the field of transportation.
The governor also said that the inauguration of the first phase would be announced within a month, noting that five stations have already been installed in Abdel Moneim Riyad, Tahrir, Falaki, Mohammad Farid squares, and Abdel Kaliq Tharwat Street.
Moreover, the governor reviewed how the stations operate and how the citizens can hire a bicycle via the mobile application, which will offer the nearest bike station.
The governor announced that the fares are one pound/ hour and a maximum of 8 pounds/ day for citizens. Meanwhile, secondary school students would pay 70 piasters/ hour for secondary school students and a maximum of 8 pounds/ day. He added that the annual subscription is 600 pounds and 400 for secondary school and university students.
The governor was accompanied by Deputy Cairo Governor Ibrahim Abdel Hadi, Assistant Secretary-General Ibrahim Awad, and several officials of the Cairo Bike Project and the Cairo governorate.
