Cairo Gov. announces winning projects of the smart green initiative

In the framework of Egypt’s preparations for hosting the 27th session of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) held in Sharm El-Sheikh city next month, Cairo governorate held Saturday a conference to announce the winning projects of the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects in Greater Cairo (Cairo, Giza, and Qalyubia) , organized under the auspices of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, in the presence of Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal, Giza Governor Ahmad Rashid, and Qalyubia Governor Abdel Hamid El-Haggan.

 

The conference was attended by Head of the Chairman of the Organizing Committee and Coordinator of the initiative Ambassador Hisham Badr, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Planning and the General Supervisor of Egypt’s Government Excellence Award Khaled Mustafa; Deputy Cairo Governor for west area Ibrahim Abdel Hadi; Deputy Cairo Governor for east area Ibrahim Saber; Deputy Cairo Governor for south area Jihan Abdel Moneim, Deputy Cairo Governor for north area Hossam Fawzy, Deputy Giza Governor for Environment Development and Community Service Hend Abdel Halim, President of Benha University Gamal Sousa, Cairo governorate’s Secretary-General Ibrahim Awad, Giza governorate’s Secretary-General Hisham Khashba Director of UN-Habitat Egypt Program Rania Hedaya, Vice President of Ain Shams University for Community Service and Environmental Development Dr. Ghada Farouq, Advisor to the Ministry of Culture Nahed Abdel Hamid, Representative of WHO IN Egypt Dr. Naeema El-kasir, and representatives of ministries of planning, environment, communications, and National Council for Women along with officials of the initiative’s evaluating committees.         

 
During his speech at the conference, Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal sincerely thanked President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi for launching the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects and thanked Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli for supporting the initiative.
 

Abdel Aal welcomed all attendees and expressed his happiness at their participation in the event of announcing and honoring the owners of the 18 winning projects in Greater Cairo.

 

Abdel Aal added during his speech that the conference has particular importance in terms of its time as the world anticipates the COP27 hosted by Egypt in Sharm El-Sheikh city next November.

 

Moreover, Abdel Aal said that today’s momentous event shows a leading Egyptian initiative whose core is achieving sustainable development of climate and engaging citizens in sharing their ideas and feasible projects.

   
Abdel Aal also said that the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects, launched by President El-Sisi, is unprecedented and reflects honest will to achieve Egypt’s sustainable development goals and Egypt vision 2030 following President El-Sisi’s directives to raise growth rates, create more job opportunities, improve the quality of work, and maximize the use of all available resources.
 

Addressing the conference, Abdel Aal pointed out that as part of the Egyptian state’s keenness to effectively participate in tackling climate change, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi welcomed Egypt’s hosting of the 27th session of the UN Climate Change Conference. He added that COP27 aims to exchange global talks on climate issues and their impact as well as climate change repercussions and implications, especially for the African Continent.  

 

Abdel Aal furthermore asserted that today’s celebration of the winning projects of the initiative is the outcome of the great efforts exerted by the officials and team works of the three governorates over the past few days. He also pointed out that the Cairo governorate held more than 40 introductory seminars and workshops in cooperation with several research agencies of the Ministry of Higher Education and other ministries.

 

Abdel Aal hailed all the winning projects of the initiative, which could play a key role in light of climate change and its economic and industrial impacts that affect all countries, including Egypt.

 

Abdel Aal noted that all previous efforts yielded good results for Cairo, which competed with 949 various projects, of which 365 projects fulfilled all criteria, thanking Cairo’s distinguished youth and everyone who participated and contributed to the success of the initiative.

 

Abdel Aal also thanked the ministries of Local Development, Environment, Planning, Foreign Affairs, and juries for their efforts.

 

The announced winning projects from Cairo are the project of operating eco-friendly and smart public transport submitted by the General Authority of Public Transport on the category of large projects, the project of converting internal combustion engine vehicle into electric one submitted by the Faculty of Engineering, Ain shams University on the category of medium projects, the project of transferring food leftover into clear energy on the category of startups, the project of removing and recycling waste from the Nile submitted by Cairo Sea Scout, and the project of B. Green submitted by the Institute of Environmental Studies and Research, Ain Shams University on the category of Women’s projects.
