Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal inspected a model of one of the bike-sharing stations, which will be installed and dispatched in Downtown Cairo as part of the Cairo Bike Project. The Cairo Bike Project aims to promote cycling as an alternative mode of non-motorized transportation in the capital.
Abdel Aal pointed out that Cairo will be a pioneer in implementing the bike-sharing system, as it is the first of its kind in Egypt. He added that Cairo Bike was selected after discussions between the Cairo governorate, civil society, cyclist groups, and environmentalists.
Moreover, Abdel Aal said that the Cairo Bike Project is a collaborative effort between the Cairo governorate and development partners with the support of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (Habitat) and funded by the Swiss Dorosos Foundation.
Abdel Aal also asserted that the preparations for setting up the bike-sharing stations were completed, noting that the idea of the program is based on sharing bicycles through a mobile application at affordable fees starting from one pound per hour or prepaid cards. It will be implemented in the Downtown area, Garden City, and Zamalek neighborhoods and includes 500 bicycles and 45 stations dispatched across Cairo near metro stations and public transportation lines.
Abdel Aal, furthermore, said that the bike-sharing Project is consistent with Egypt’s preparations to host COP27, adding that the Cairo governorate is seeking to cope with current developments and provide what is needed to support the integration of public transportation and encourage healthy practices to reduce carbon emissions in the capital.
Abdel Aal also pointed out that the Cairo governorate strives to encourage citizens to reduce the use of private cars to ease traffic congestion and reduce air pollution by providing an alternative mode of transportation. He continued that Cairo always seeks to benefit from global experiences in the transportation field.
The Cairo Bike Project consists of two phases with a total of 500 bicycles served by 24 solar systems stations. The first phase will be in mid-July and the second in mid-September 2022.
