Dr. Sherif Farouk, Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, said that the ministry has held several meetings at different intervals with the General Bakery Division, the Grain Industry Chamber, and mill owners to monitor the tourist and foreign-style bread market and track changes in the prices of production inputs, particularly free-market flour.
The Minister of Supply explained that the General Bakery Division had submitted a request to increase tourist bread prices in proportion to the rise in free-market flour prices, amid higher wheat prices used in its production.
He added that the ministry is currently reviewing the request, along with conducting a detailed assessment of production costs to determine the actual increase in production expenses and its impact on the cost of producing a loaf of bread.
Farouk noted that the ministry continues to monitor the tourist and foreign-style bread market and changes in production costs, stressing that any decision regarding prices will be based on a detailed assessment of all cost components and market developments, while balancing production sustainability with citizens’ interests.
The Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade had previously confirmed in a statement that Ministerial Directive No. 5 of 2026 remains in effect, regulating the prices and weights of tourist bread, foreign-style bread, and Fino bread, with bakeries required to comply with the specified prices and weights.
The ministry stressed that any violation of Ministerial Directive No. 5 of 2026 will face the necessary legal measures, which in some cases may include imprisonment and financial fines.
