Eng. Mahmoud El-Sheikh, Director of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, announced plans to strengthen integration between the project and public transportation networks across Greater Cairo, including the Cairo Metro, the Light Rail Transit (LRT), and the East and West Nile Monorail lines. He added that work is underway to develop a unified smart card system to serve the entire public transportation network.
El-Sheikh explained that the BRT project is part of an integrated public transportation system designed to make transfers between different modes of transport easier, reduce reliance on private cars, and provide more reliable and efficient travel options throughout Greater Cairo.
He noted that the BRT network connects to Metro Line 1 through El-Marg station in the north and El-Zahraa station in the south. It also connects to Metro Line 2 through El-Bahr El-Azam (El-Mounib) station in the south and the Alexandria Agricultural Road station in the north, with a future extension of Line 2 to Qalyub station.
The network also connects to Metro Line 3 through Adly Mansour station in the east and Imbaba station in the west. Additional interchange stations are planned to connect the BRT network with Metro Lines 4 and 6, further facilitating transfers between existing and future public transportation services.
El-Sheikh added that the BRT system also integrates with the Light Rail Transit (LRT) through the Adly Mansour central interchange station, providing access to the New Administrative Capital. It also connects with the East Nile Monorail at the Field Marshal Tantawy station and the West Nile Monorail at the 26th of July Corridor station. The project director emphasized that integration between transportation systems goes beyond physical connections between stations. It also involves improving ticketing systems and making transfers between different lines more convenient.
He explained that the unified smart card currently under development aims to make the public transportation network easier and more efficient to use.
He further noted that the project is part of a broader strategy to develop a modern, environmentally friendly, and sustainable transportation system serving approximately 30 million residents and visitors in Greater Cairo every day, by connecting residential areas and activity centers through an integrated public transportation network.
El-Sheikh stated that completing all three phases of the project will maximize the benefits of its interchange connections with other transportation systems and transform the Ring Road into a major corridor for organized public transportation. This is expected to improve mobility and encourage commuters to use public transportation instead of private cars.
He also stressed that the project's success depends on passengers complying with bus and station usage regulations. The operating company continuously monitors passenger numbers and feedback to improve service quality and enhance the overall user experience.
