Egypt and Russia are marking the 82nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, a partnership characterized by friendship, mutual respect, and continuous cooperation across political, economic, cultural, and trade sectors. The milestone reflects the depth of the strategic partnership that unites Cairo and Moscow.
According to a statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry on its official Facebook page, bilateral cooperation has steadily expanded under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement, which came into force in 2021.
The ministry highlighted that the two countries maintain regular high-level contacts. Russian President Vladimir Putin met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit held in Kazan in October 2024. President El-Sisi also attended the military parade in Moscow in May 2024.
Throughout 2024, Egyptian-Russian diplomacy was notably active. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held talks with then-Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry during the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting in Nizhny Novgorod in June, and later met with his successor, Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, during an official visit to Moscow in September.
Egypt’s official accession to the BRICS group in January 2024 gave significant momentum to bilateral ties, strengthening coordination between Cairo and Moscow within the United Nations and other multilateral platforms.
The statement also underlined the importance of the Russian-Egyptian Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation. Its most recent session was held in May, co-chaired by Egypt’s Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan Khatib and his Russian counterpart Anton Alikhanov. Bilateral trade volume reached approximately $9 billion in 2024, making Egypt Russia’s largest trading partner in Africa.
Tourism cooperation also remains a vital aspect of the relationship, with Egypt continuing to be a top destination for Russian visitors. Around 1.6 million Russian tourists visited Egypt in 2024, underscoring the strong people-to-people ties.
The Russian Foreign Ministry concluded its statement by extending congratulations to the Egyptian people on the anniversary of diplomatic ties, reaffirming Moscow’s commitment to further develop and strengthen all dimensions of bilateral relations with Cairo.
