Egypt, China renew scientific partnership in combating endemic diseases

Egyptian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Dr. Ayman Ashour affirmed that the Ministry places special emphasis on encouraging research partnerships with prestigious international institutions.

This contributes to raising the efficiency of scientific research in Egypt and providing promising opportunities for Egyptian researchers to collaborate and learn from international expertise.

He noted that scientific research is one of the fundamental pillars of supporting the health system and achieving sustainable development goals.

In this context, and under the auspices of the Minister, the Theodor Bilharz Research Institute and Wuhan University in China signed a new memorandum of understanding aimed at deepening scientific and academic cooperation between the two parties in the field of combating endemic diseases. This agreement comes within the framework of the growing scientific relations between Egypt and China.

The agreement is also an extension of the scientific partnership that began in December 2019, when the first memorandum of understanding was signed, focusing on the study of intermediate snails responsible for schistosomiasis and the testing of molluscicides. The new agreement represents a qualitative shift in this cooperation, through the establishment of a joint research laboratory at Wuhan University to study the disease and its transmitting snails. It further includes the exchange of researchers, the organization of joint scientific conferences and seminars, and cooperation in international scientific publishing.

Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz expressed his happiness at the renewal of the partnership with Wuhan University, emphasizing that the agreement is a model for fruitful international cooperation in the field of scientific research and addressing health challenges. He explained that through these partnerships, the institute seeks to enhance the status of scientific research in Egypt and enable young researchers to interact with the latest research developments at the international level.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the Egyptian side by Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Acting Director of the Institute, and on behalf of the Chinese side by Dr. Yufeng Yuan, Vice President of Wuhan University. The cooperation is coordinated by Dr. Mohamed Ramadan Habib, Acting Head of the Department of Medical Molluscs at the Theodor Bilharz Research Institute, and Dr. Chenping Zhao from Wuhan University.
