Egypt, Sudan talk strengthening bilateral health cooperation

Egyptian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar met with Dr. Haitham Ibrahim Awadallah, Minister of Health of Sudan, at the Ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital to discuss ways to enhance health cooperation between the two brotherly countries.

The meeting was attended by Ambassador Emad El-Din Mustafa, the Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan to Egypt, along with several senior officials from both sides.

In the beginning, Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar welcomed the Sudanese Minister and his accompanying delegation, reaffirming Egypt’s steadfast commitment to supporting its brothers in Sudan, rooted in the deep historical and fraternal ties between the two nations. He emphasized Egypt’s pioneering role in strengthening health systems across Africa, particularly in providing comprehensive health and humanitarian support to Sudan.

According to Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, discussions during the meeting focused on mechanisms to enhance cooperation in epidemic control, strengthening the Sudanese health system, and emergency response coordination.

Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar reiterated Egypt’s readiness to provide full support, including the delivery of 200,000 cartons of infant formula, 200 oxygen cylinders, and expanded collaboration in the pharmaceutical sector and in combating endemic diseases.

The two sides also reviewed the progress of the project supporting Sudanese kidney failure patients residing in Egypt, implemented in cooperation with the World Health Organization and the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center. They further agreed to dispatch an Egyptian medical convoy to Osman Digna Hospital in Port Sudan, comprising a group of leading physicians to provide specialized medical and surgical services. Additionally, both parties agreed to develop future protocols aimed at advancing health services in Sudan.

For his part, Dr. Haitham Ibrahim expressed his sincere appreciation to Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar and the Egyptian government for their continued support, commending the strong relations between the two countries and the Egyptian leadership’s ongoing efforts to assist Sudan in addressing health challenges.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both ministers underscored the importance of sustained coordination and collaboration to further strengthen health cooperation — reflecting the enduring and historic bonds between Egypt and Sudan.

The meeting was also attended from the Egyptian side by Dr. Amr Kandil, Deputy Minister of Health, and Ambassador Karim Mukhtar, representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with a number of health officials. Representing the Sudanese side were Dr. Khader Faisal, Medical Attaché, and Dr. Alaa El Tayeb, Director General of the International Health Department.
