Mostafa Abdel Gawad, head of
Sugar Crops Council of the Ministry of Agriculture, confirmed that Egypt is
witnessing a significant breakthrough in achieving self-sufficiency in sugar,
which is considered one of the country’s strategic crops. In televised remarks
on Saturday, Abdel Gawad stated that Egypt has reached approximately 90%
self-sufficiency in sugar.
He added that next year, the country is expected to achieve full self-sufficiency—100%—with the Canal Sugar Company’s factory operating at full production capacity. He pointed out that the state is planning to establish a factory in the Dabaa area, which would allow Egypt to begin exporting sugar and generate a surplus in sugar production.
