Abdelatty meets Ugandan Minister of State for Foreign Affairs

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, met on Monday, August 4th, 2025, August 4, with the Ugandan Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Henry Oryem Okello, in the presence of the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Dr. Hani Sewilam, during the visit by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Irrigation to the Ugandan capital, Kampala.

The meeting addressed means of enhancing Egyptian-Ugandan relations and intensifying coordination and consultation on issues of mutual concern.

The Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, stated that Minister Abdelatty praised the depth of the historical relations and fraternal ties between the two sisterly countries, and the importance Egypt attaches to developing bilateral relations with Uganda.

He expressed aspiration to elevate political and economic relations between the two countries and for Uganda to benefit from the financing mechanism for development projects in the southern Nile Basin countries established by Egypt.

Within the framework of the distinguished relations between the two countries, the Foreign Minister handed over a grant, in the presence of the Ugandan Minister of International Relations.

The grant consists of agricultural equipment and light transport vehicles to a Ugandan civil society organization that plays an active role in supporting youth and small-scale farmers in Uganda.

The Foreign Minister affirmed openness to strengthening technical cooperation between the two countries in the fields of economy, investment, development, infrastructure, and energy, as well as increasing access for Egyptian products to the Ugandan market and continuing support for Egyptian companies operating in Uganda.

He highlighted the readiness of Egyptian companies to continue contributing to the modernization and development of Uganda in line with the vision of President Museveni, particularly in the sectors of infrastructure, energy, water, and pharmaceutical industries, including the localization of part of these industries in Uganda, in light of the successful experiences of Egyptian companies across Africa.

He also noted the participation of Ugandan personnel in the training programs and courses provided by the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD), which the Ugandan side expressed appreciation for as part of Egypt's technical support in capacity-building.

The Spokesperson added that the meeting addressed the issue of water security, where the Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of cooperation in accordance with the rules of international law to safeguard the interests of all Nile Basin countries, stressing Egypt’s rejection of unilateral measures that violate international law in the Eastern Nile Basin. He affirmed that Egypt will take all necessary measures, in line with international law, to protect its water security.

The Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation reviewed aspects of bilateral cooperation and ongoing projects between Egypt and Uganda in the field of water resources, affirming that respect for international law on the Nile River is the foundation for positive cooperation to achieve the common interest of all Nile Basin countries.

In a related context, the meeting addressed regional developments, including the security and political situation in the region, particularly developments in Somalia and the deployment of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), in which both Egypt and Uganda participate.

Minister Abdelatty underscored the need to preserve the unity, sovereignty, and stability of Somalia and Sudan, support national state institutions, and work towards establishing stability and promoting peace, security, and development in the region and across the African continent.
