Egypt's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, confirmed that no new viruses are circulating in the country.
Speaking at a press conference, he emphasized there is no spread of any new or unknown respiratory viruses. He specifically denied rumors circulating about the presence of the Marburg virus in Egypt, stating there is absolutely no truth to the claims.
Abdel Ghaffar explained that Egypt relies on an advanced smart monitoring system, which includes 5,500 facilities operating on an event-based surveillance system. This network is complemented by strict quarantine procedures and measures at all entry points.
He noted that of the 424,000 health-related signals recently monitored, 90% to 95% proved to be rumors and misinformation. He stressed, “No country in the world, including Egypt, has any interest in concealing any information about diseases.”
Abdel Ghaffar also addressed the usual seasonal increase in influenza activity, noting that the H1N1 strain is currently dominant. He affirmed the seasonal influenza vaccine's safety and effectiveness, especially for the most vulnerable groups.
