The General Authority for Roads and Bridges continues to work on training drivers of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in a prelude to operate the first phase of the BRT project.
The Transport Ministry said in a statement that the authority operated 10 buses as a beginning for training the drivers, while the total number of operated buses hit 50 so far.
The operation of these buses has been carried out under directives issued by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to the prime minister and the minister of transport and industry to localize the national industries under a comprehensive plan to develop the industrial sector to change Egypt into a regional industrial hub, the note said.
The first phase of BRT project includes 14 stations, out of the total 48 stations of the three phases.
BRT is known as a bus-based mass transit system with dedicated right of way lanes (bus lanes) in which buses are given priority at intersections. These lanes increase BRT movement speed through crowded cities that suffer from traffic congestion, such as Cairo.
The BRT will also be an alternative to the microbus. A service road will be constructed to connect the microbus stops and the new bus stations.
The project aims to operate 100 electric buses along the road, and they will be connected to other means of transportation, including service stop points under the ring road, in addition to other means of transportation such as the metro, trains, and super-jet.
