Sisi in Rio de Janeiro to take part in G20 summit

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi will take part in the G20 Summit, which starts in Rio de Janeiro upon an invitation from Brazilian President Lula da Silva.

It will be the fourth participation of Egypt in G20 summits as the first was held in China in 2016, the second in Japan in 2019 and the third in India in 2023, Presidency Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said.

This reflects growing international recognition of Egypt’s significant role and its pivotal position regionally, he added.

Held under the theme of ‘Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet’, the two-day summit will address a number of key issues of priority for developing countries, including social inclusion and the fight against poverty and hunger, reforming global governance institutions, and energy transition within the framework of sustainable development, the presidency spokesman said.

President Sisi will deliver Egypt’s statements to summit sessions, highlighting the country’s development efforts, the challenges facing developing countries in achieving sustainable development goals, and the global political and economic volatility.

He will also reaffirm Egypt’s vision that attaches priority to solidarity and enhanced co-operation in addressing these challenges, Spokesman Fahmy said.

In his speeches, President Sisi is expected to focus on regional issues, particularly the ongoing crisis and instability in the Middle East with the continuation of Israeli escalation in Palestine and Lebanon. In this context, President Sisi will outline Egypt’s efforts to restore stability in the region.

The summit will officially launch the “Global Alliance to Combat Poverty and Hunger,” an international initiative spearheaded by Brazil during its G20 presidency.

This alliance aims to promote social inclusion and eradicate poverty and hunger by mobilizing financial and knowledge resources to accelerate global efforts towards achieving these critical Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

On the sidelines of G20 summit meetings, President Sisi is expected to meet several world leaders to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations, enhance international co-operation in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and advance efforts to restore peace and regional security, in line with the aspirations of peoples of the region for prosperity and development, the presidency spokesman said.
