President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi addressed the growing challenge of the food crisis in the African continent in the mini Africa-Europe summit held on the sidelines of the G20 summit in New Delhi on Saturday, the Egyptian presidency announced.
The mini Africa-Europe summit brought together leaders and representatives from Egypt, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, France, South Africa, Nigeria, and the Comoros Islands as the current chair of the African Union, along with the European Union, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund.
The Egyptian presidency highlighted the negative impact of current international developments on food security especially in Africa.
El-Sisi stressed that these challenges require a shared vision to enhance the governance of the global food security system.
This vision should be centered on the importance of a multilateral framework and the coherence of efforts by international financial institutions in responding swiftly and effectively to the crisis, addressing its multiple roots and dimensions.
Furthermore, the president reaffirmed that one of the top priorities of Egypt's presidency of the NEPAD (New Partnership for Africa's Development) is to activate the comprehensive African program for agricultural development to support food security in Africa.
The summit also addressed the AU formally joining the G20.
President El-Sisi welcomed this development, emphasizing that it represents a positive step toward enabling the continent to prioritize its issues on the international agenda.
