Egypt to launch National Employment Strategy shortly

Egypt's Minister of Labor Hassan Shehata said the ministry will finalize and launch the National Strategy for Employment soon to cope with changes in the labor market.

Several stages of the strategy's implementation have been finalized, upon directives of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, Shehata said in statements to the Egyptian official state agency (MENA).

He added that the National Employment Strategy will contribute to outlining the market needs to reduce the unemployment rates, highlighting the ministry's efforts to secure job opportunities in cooperation with partners and other ministries.

The labor minister also pointed out the cooperation between the ministry and the International Labor Organization (ILO) in formulating the National Employment Strategy.

Furthermore, Shehata asserted the keenness of the labor ministry to swiftly finalize the strategy to document policies of the labor market, offer services and occupational incentives, and provide verified information.

Egypt reported 2.169 million unemployed individuals in the second quarter of 2023, comprising seven percent of the total workforce.

In comparison to the first quarter of the current year, the number of unemployed decreased by 2,000 individuals.

However, when measured against the second quarter of the previous years, the number of unemployed turns out to have increased to 18,000 individuals, according to a report from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics CAPMAS) released on Tuesday.
