Egypt, Mauritania stress importance of prompt, durable truce in Sudan

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi said on Sunday that his talks with and the visiting Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani were intensive and constructive discussions, covering various bilateral, regional and international issues and reflecting joint political will for the consolidation of distinguished relations between the two countries.

Speaking to a press conference following the summit meeting on Sunday, President Sisi said that discussions with President Ould Ghazouani reflected mutual political will to promote bilateral relations, ushering them to wider horizons through energizing the frameworks for co-operation.

The summit talks, President Sisi added, also covered coordination between the two countries in various fields, taking into account the common challenges facing Egypt and Mauritania, including those of achieving comprehensive development, confronting external interference in the region, combating terrorism and extremist ideology, and preserving the national state and its institutions.

In his statement to the press conference, President said that agreement was reached during the summit talks on promoting economic, investment and trade ties, in addition to expediting the preparations for convening the next session of the Egyptian-Mauritanian Joint Higher Committee.

Due to meet this year, the Committee would serve the common target of consolidating bilateral relations, deepening partnership and boosting the frameworks for co-operation and coordination on all issues of common interest, the Egyptian leader said.

The latest developments on the Arab scene were also considered during the summit talks, President Sisi said, adding that he and President Ould Ghazouani agreed on the importance of advancing the mechanisms of joint Arab action with a view to maintaining Arab national security and protecting the unity, sovereignty and potentials of Arab countries.

On the developments of the situation in the Sudan, President Sisi said he and President Ould Ghazouani stressed the importance of an immediate and durable ceasefire as well as the need for preserving the Sudanese national institutions and preventing their collapse.

The two leaders also agreed to bolster efforts on the African domain, carrying on with coordination within the framework of the African Union, as well as supporting the peace, security and development structure on the continent.
