Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal announced that the capital would participate in the world environmental event to reduce energy consumption and address global warming “Earth Hour” by turning off 50% of its lighting for an hour from 8:30 to 9:30 at the Cairo governorate headquarters and all affiliated authorities, facilities, and public buildings.
Abdel Aal asserted that the capital participation in that global event comes in line with Egypt’s participation in this annual event, held every year on the last Saturday of March, from 8:30 PM to 9:30, along with most of the world’s countries to raise awareness about negative impacts of global warming and climate change.
Moreover, Abdel Aal said that the “Earth Hour” event sends a powerful message of the necessity of preserving natural resources for future generations, calling on citizens to partake in the event by reducing power consumption at their houses.
Abdel Aal added that Cairo’s participation aims to save energy, reduce gas emissions causing global warming, and encourage citizens to take responsibility for confronting challenges and engage with the world to reduce the causes of climate change.
Earth Hour is an annual event organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). It started back in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, and has since grown into a global movement. The main idea behind Earth Hour is for people to turn off their lights and electronic devices for one hour.
