Rania El Mashat will take part in the 2023 Spring Meetings of the World Bank
Group (WBG) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which will take place in
person from Monday, April 10 to Sunday, April 16 in the WBG and IMF
headquarters, in Washington D.C., under the theme of "The Way Forward:
Building Resilience and Reshaping Development".
The Spring Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the WBG and the IMF bring together central bankers, ministers of finance and development, parliamentarians, private sector executives, representatives from civil society organizations and academics to discuss issues of global concern, including the world economic outlook, poverty eradication, economic development, and aid effectiveness. Also featured are seminars, regional briefings, press conferences, and many other events focused on the global economy, international development, and the world's financial system.
World Bank Group President David Malpass and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva will kick off the Spring Meetings with a discussion on the complex challenges facing the global economy.
Three years since the pandemic started, uncertainties and risks still weigh heavily on the global economy. Stubborn inflation, the cost-of-living crisis, and slower growth effects all the world, but especially hurts the poor and most vulnerable. Record high debt is holding back developing countries, and the effects of climate change are threatening lives and livelihoods around the world.
The minister of international cooperation is scheduled to participate in a number of events, including the meetings of the Intergovernmental Group of Twenty-Four on International Monetary Affairs and Development, and other discussion sessions on the role of non-profit organizations in implementing climate ambition, climate financing and energy security, and discussing and evaluating the role of multilateral development banks in supporting development efforts and enhancing the role of the private sector in climate action efforts and carbon markets, in addition to the meetings of the Development Committee of the World Bank Group, and the meeting of the Human Capital Project (HCP).
Mashat, who is the Governor of Egypt at the World Bank Group, is also set to hold many meetings, on the sidelines of the WBG-IMF events, with multilateral and bilateral development partners from the World Bank Group, the US government, the European Investment Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the International Finance Corporation, the Climate Investment Funds, as well as representatives of international companies, the private sector and other relevant parties.
