Sisi: Development, stability key to stemming global crisis of refugee

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Monday stressed the importance of dealing with the phenomenon of refugee flows and all forms of displacement through a comprehensive approach, targeting the roots of crises related to the challenges of settling conflicts, achieving security and political stability, and comprehensive sustainable development.

The President’s remarks came as he received the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, Presidency spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said.

During the meeting, the President expressed appreciation of the decades-old cooperation between Egypt and the UNHCR and lauded the Commission’s efforts at the international level under conditions of a mounting global refugee crisis, spokesman Fahmy said.

For his part, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees affirmed the UNHCR’s keenness to enhance cooperation with Egypt, pointing in this context to the centrality of the Egyptian role at the regional and international levels and expressing the Commission’s appreciation for the efforts made by Egypt to host large numbers of refugees of different nationalities.

He also referred to the visit he paid to the crossing points on the Egyptian-Sudanese border, during which he witnessed the enormous effort made by the Egyptian authorities concerned in cooperation with the United Nations organizations and the Egyptian Red Crescent to provide aid to arriving people, be they Sudanese or of other nationalities.

In this respect, the UN agency’s high commissioner called upon the international community and donors to provide assistance to countries hosting refugees and those affected by human displacement.
