Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri has pressed for international political commitment to achieve further progress in dealing with climate change in a meaningful way.
Speaking at a press conference with his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock in Berlin, Shoukri said the world is currently facing major challenges and risks of ecological disturbances and food insecurity.
Shoukri also stressed the need to swiftly act through climate negotiations and help developing countries to confront this phenomenon, based on the principles of the legally binding international treaty on climate change, known as “Paris Agreement”. There should be a clear understanding of the different capabilities, responsibilities and needs of each country, he added.
Shoukri also thanked Germany on its serious commitment to apply measures to combat climate change. Germany has set itself ambitious targets for reducing gas emissions, for instance with the Climate Action Plan 2050 and the Climate Action Program 2020.
Shoukri said that he looks forward to cooperating with Berlin to render successful the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 27) to the UNFCCC, set for the Red Sea resort of Sharm El Sheikh in November.
Baerbock said that many countries can provide aid to overcome problems caused by climate change and the negative impacts of climatic change that resulted from rising temperatures.
She went on to say the issue is not
providing more funding in return for abandoning or taking steps backwards in
achieving climate moderation.
Baerbock said Germany offers financial compensation or more financial resources in exchange for giving up on the goals that were set in advance to reach a good degree of climate moderation.
