Egyptian, Moroccan FMs meet in Rabat

Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry and his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita agreed during a meeting in Rabat to promote cooperation between both countries.

 
The meeting comes in line with the directives of Egypt’s President Abdel-Fatah El-Sisi and Morocco’s King Mohammed VI.
  

Both officials also agreed to reactivate all cooperation frameworks to set the stage for holding meetings of the higher Egyptian-Moroccan Committee under the co-chairmanship of the two countries’ leaders.

 

Egypt’s exports to Morocco amounted to about $661.6 million in 2021, up from $437.4 million a year prior, according to the latest figures released by the Egyptian Ministry of Trade and Industry’s Export Development Authority.

 

Monday’s talks also focused on the centuries-old ties binding the two countries as well as the unity of their destiny and common objectives, read a joint communiqué that was issued following the talks.

 

During the meeting, Shoukry reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and its commitment to the UN-led process to settle the Western Sahara issue.

 

Shoukry also stressed Egypt’s support for the content of Security Council resolutions, including resolution 2,602, which welcomed Morocco’s “serious and credible” efforts to move forward towards a political settlement of the Sahara issue.

 

Additionally, the talks tackled a host of regional issues, including the long-standing dispute caused by the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), with the Moroccan side reiterating support for Egypt’s water rights.

 

The Moroccan minister also voiced his country’s support for Egypt in its preparations for the UN Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP27), which will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh this November.
