Egypt reports daily average of 5 coronavirus cases, 2 deaths over past week

Egypt recorded a daily average of five coronavirus infections and two deaths over the past week (14-20 May), the Ministry of Health said in a statement.

The figures are similar to the previous week when the ministry reported a daily average of five new cases and three deaths.

An average of 23 people was discharged per day from hospitals nationwide over the past seven days, bringing the total number of recoveries since the outbreak began in February 2020 to 445,591.

Furthermore, more than 34.8 million people have been fully vaccinated against coronavirus since the start of the country’s mass vaccination campaign last year.

Also, 45.3 million people have received their first dose of the vaccine and more than three million people have received their booster shoot, according to the ministry’s figures.

Egypt has witnessed a significant drop in coronavirus cases over the past weeks with daily cases dropping from over 2,300 in February to the lowest levels currently since the start of the pandemic.

Presidential Advisor for Health and Prevention Affairs Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din highlighted the substantial decline in coronavirus infections across the country as he met with President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Wednesday.

Tag El-Din noted that most detected cases are accompanied by mild symptoms without health complications.

For his part, El-Sisi urged authorities to continue awareness and vaccination campaigns through the national vaccination centers and to ensure easy access to the coronavirus vaccine booster shots.
