Minister of Local Development Mahmoud Shaarawi, Minister of Environment Yasmin Fouad, and Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal inspected Tuesday the ongoing preparations for launching the new solid waste management system in Cairo as part of the signed contracts between Cairo governorate, Cairo Cleaning and Beautification Authority, Erteqaa for integrated services and waste recycling Company, and Enviro Master for Environmental services and waste recycling Company. The two waste management and recycling companies would be handling garbage collection and disposal, waste recycling, street sweeping , and safe disposal of waste in Cairo's west and east areas.
The preparations included inspecting the new cleaning and sweeping machines and reviewing operating plans, as well as the follow-up mechanisms as Erteqaa Company will start from Gharb Al-Qahira district in the east area, while Enviro-Master Company will begin in Masr Al-Gadidah district in the west.
Meanwhile, the Cairo Cleaning and Beautification Authority will be responsible for garbage collection and disposal, the mechanism, operating plans, and digital transformation of the authority to monitor the performance, provide help, and cooperate with the two companies until finalizing the procedures according to the signed contracts.
For his part, Minister of Local development Shaarawi announced launching the new solid waste management system in Cairo in cooperation with the private sector represented in Erteqaa and Enviro-Master companies and Cairo Cleaning and Beautification Authority to manage waste in Cairo's four areas.
Shaarawi called on citizens not to throw garbage in the streets, especially after the return of garbage collection service from houses.
Shaarawi added that since President Sisi's directives to upgrade the waste management system, new steps were taken to develop the waste management infrastructure, including waste transfer stations and waste treatment plants. He also pointed out that the new system is fully integrated given the careful study conducted by relevant ministries as well as universities.
Meanwhile, Minister of Environment Dr. Yasmin Fouad emphasized that the new system comes as part of President Sisi's directives to develop sustainable solutions to upgrade the whole system of waste management in Egypt to improve the services provided to citizens to preserve their health. She added it was also collaborative work between the concerned ministries as they cooperated in setting up the national plan for developing the waste management system.
For his part, Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal asserted that citizens' satisfaction is the goal of the new solid waste management system and that citizens' awareness about the importance of implementing this new system is an essential element of its success.
Abdel Aal also urged mosques' Imams and churches' priests to raise awareness about the importance of keeping the streets clean as a vital part to maintain public health. He also ordered to intensify awareness campaigns in schools and universities.
For his part, the President of Cairo Cleaning and Beautification Authority pointed out that the authority began the digital transformation process, which comes as part of the state's efforts in the state's digital transformation to enhance the authority's performance, improve citizens' services, maximize the use of the authority's resources.
The officials of the two companies, for their part, thanked President Sisi, Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly, and Minister of Local Development Shaarawi for their support and vowed to work hard to make the citizens feel an actual upgrade in the waste management system.
