Foreign Ministry: Egypt proudly hosts 6 million migrants, refugees

Celebrating the Migrants Day, Egypt asserted its keenness to keep its doors open to migrants and refugees who left their homes and families searching for a better life.

Every year the world celebrates Migrants Day on 18 December which aims to raise awareness about the challenges and difficulties of international migration.

In a statement, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that Egypt is proud of hosting 6 million migrants and refugees and is keen to provide them with a decent life.

The statement asserted Egypt’s efforts to guarantee refugees rights, and enhance their integration into Egyptian society by ensuring that they enjoy health, educational and other basic services on an equal basis with Egyptian citizens.

Egypt has always considered migration a positive phenomenon and an important means to achieve development in the countries of origin and destination, and contribute to the convergence of civilizations and cultures, which leads to the strengthening of tolerance and acceptance of the other.

The celebration this year falls exactly 70 years after the Brussels conference that led to the establishment of the organization that, in 1989, was renamed the International Organization for Migration.
