Egypt's FA requests attendance of up to 30,000 fans for Gabon World Cup qualifier

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) said on Sunday it had asked authorities to allow the attendance of up to 30,000 fans for the national team's World Cup qualifier against Gabon next month.

An outright crowd ban has been in place since the COVID-19 pandemic emerged in early 2020 but the EFA said recently a limited number of supporters would be allowed to attend domestic league matches.

"The EFA … has requested that 30,000 fans be allowed to attend the clash against Gabon in the final Group F World Cup qualifier at (Alexandria's) Egyptian Army Stadium in Borg El-Arab," the governing body said in a statement.

"The EFA's request comes in accordance with the relevant authorities' desire to bring fans back to the stands."

Egypt top their World Cup qualifying group with 10 points, four ahead of second-placed Libya with only two matches to go.

They can well secure their place in the final two-legged playoff before hosting Gabon if they beat Angola (bottom with three points) away from home next month. Gabon lie third with four points.
