Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly held an inspection
tour at the New Administrative Capital on Saturday to follow up on various
construction projects within the framework of the government’s plan to relocate
all ministry headquarters and their employees to the new capital by 2021.
According to a statement by the cabinet, Madbouly toured the under-construction headquarters of the cabinet in addition to the premises of the ministries of finance and foreign affairs.
The new governmental district in the administrative capital, which is being built on 1.5 million square meters, houses 10 ministerial complexes, grouping 34 ministries in addition to the headquarters of the cabinet and House of Representatives, the cabinet statement said.
During the tour, according to the statement, Madbouly listened to the latest developments concerning the implementation of the utilities, including water and electricity plants and the communications network.
Madbouly, who was accompanied by Housing Minister Essam El-Gazzar and officials from the Armed Forces Engineering Authority and the Administrative Capital for Urban Development Company, stressed the importance of committing to the deadline for finalizing the projects.
The government was planning to relocate ministries and 52,300 government employees to the new capital by mid-2020, but the coronavirus pandemic forced it to reschedule the move.
In April, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi instructed the government to reschedule the inauguration of all national mega-projects planned for this year, including the New Capital and the Grand Egyptian Museum.
The officials, the statement says, told Madbouly that 87 percent of the governmental district has been already completed, adding that 234 floors and 2,086 service rooms have been handed over.
The statement said that the ongoing construction of the district is being conducted by the Armed Forces Engineering Authority, in partnership with private and 20 public sector firms, and that the project has provided 100,000 job opportunities.
According to El-Husseini, it is expected that the majority of the first phase, including the government district, the parliament building, residential neighborhoods, the cultural and sports zones and some universities, will be completed by mid-2021.
