The member of the National Elections
Committee, Khaled Eraq, said that the committee has taken several measures to
complete the course of the Senate elections process in light of the challenges
facing Egypt, especially with the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.
Eraq confirmed that the voter database contains approximately 63 million eligible voters in Senate election.
A member of the National Committee added, during the workshop organized by the National Press Authority (NPA) on Saturday on Senate election, that the authority increased the number of polling stations due to the Coronavirus pandemic by about 17,000.
The commission also decided to oblige all parties to the electoral process to implement preventive measures, including wearing masks and adhering to social spacing distances outside and within the polling elections, the electoral committees received on July 16, candidacy papers of 113 Senate candidates, Head of the National Elections Authority (NEA) Lashin Ibrahim said.
This brings the total number of Senate candidates to 682 since the follow-up committees formed by the NEA started receiving candidacy requests at 27 courts nationwide on Saturday, Ibrahim noted. The deadline for filing candidacy papers is July 18.
The authority is expected to announce the preliminary list of candidates along with their election symbols in a couple of widely circulated papers on July 19.
The NEA issued a decision on the formation of committees to follow up on the election and report any campaigning violations nationwide, it detailed that such violations include bullying, the use of religious or discrimination symbols, or worshipping places in the campaigning and posing threats to national unity, among others.
