Cairo Governor Dr. Ibrahim Saber met with the members of the two executive committees established to evaluate green projects as part of the governorate’s participation in the fourth edition of the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects. During the meeting, the committees presented their final report on the projects representing Cairo among 1,043 qualified submissions.
Governor Saber stated that the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects is an unprecedented one that reflects Egypt’s true vision to achieve sustainable development goals, as directed by the political leadership. This vision aims to increase green areas and exert all efforts to realize comprehensive development. He added that the initiative seeks to raise growth rates while prioritizing environmental protection, improving standards of performance, upholding the rights of future generations, and maximizing the use of available resources.
Saber further said that the initiative targets compliance with environmental sustainability standards, leading to reduced carbon emissions, less pollution, and maintenance of natural resources. It also promotes projects that enhance energy and resource efficiency and address food and water security challenges. It also supports ecosystem services and biodiversity, which help mitigate the impacts of climate change.
The governor said that the capital ranked first among all governorates in submitted projects across all categories: large-scale projects, medium projects, and local small projects under “Decent Life.” It also included projects from start-ups, non-profit community participation, and women’s empowerment development and sustainability projects. The governorate submitted a total of 3,427 projects, of which 1,043 qualified, leading the Ministry of Planning’s supervisory committee to form two evaluation committees.
Sabe said that the governorate provided all required facilities to allow the committees to perform their tasks. The committees, organized by the Ministry of Planning, included professors and specialists from Ain Shams University, the National Council for Women, and the Ministries of Planning, Local Development, and Environment, as well as the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development Agency, to provide a comprehensive technical and academic perspective on environmental and economic aspects.
Saber also praised the effort of the two committees and all participants whose projects and ideas complied with the required standards featured in the smart green projects initiative’s fourth edition. It will ensure that these projects achieve sustainable development and the public interest while optimizing their benefits.
Saber further said that the best three projects from each category were selected, with 18 projects from Cairo advanced to the Higher Committee for final selection of winners to participate in the upcoming Climate Conference (COP30).
The governor also stated that Cairo adopted a scientific strategy in coordination with the Ministry of Higher Education, universities, and research centers to leverage PhD and master’s dissertations as well as graduation projects. Collaboration was also established with environmental NGOs, the National Council for Women, and young graduates to develop projects of real value that benefit the environment. He added that the number of qualified projects reached 1,043.
Saber also expressed confidence in the ability of Cairo’s citizens to present outstanding projects that will drive sustainable development in the next phases of the initiative. He added that the governorate will spare no effort in supporting the winning projects, emphasizing the importance of civil society organizations and start-ups in positively engaging and participating in the initiative.
