Dr. Ibrahim Saber, Governor of Cairo, inspected landscaping and development works in the Al-Sayyida Nafisa and East Nasr City areas as part of field monitoring of the governorate’s plan to expand green spaces, in implementation of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s initiative to “Green Cairo.”
During his tour, the Governor followed up on the landscaping of major roads, squares, and thoroughfares, as well as the progress of planting and landscaping works and the improvement of existing green spaces. He directed that trees and plants be increased wherever possible to enhance the capital’s urban appearance and provide a better environment for citizens.
Dr. Ibrahim Saber affirmed that, in implementation of Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly’s directives, all available spaces within the governorate will be utilized. Vacated and underutilized sites will be transformed, according to the nature of each location, into green spaces, gardens, and parks to serve residents and provide recreational areas within urban neighborhoods.
The Governor stressed the need to preserve existing trees and avoid pruning them except when absolutely necessary and in accordance with technical standards. He also called for expanding the planting of species suited to Cairo’s prevailing environmental and climatic conditions.
He further directed that clear criteria be considered when selecting trees and plants for the project, including rapid growth, adequate shade, resilience to climatic conditions, and compatibility with appropriate and sustainable irrigation methods, ensuring the preservation of vegetation while rationalizing water consumption.
The Governor affirmed that the Green Cairo plan will be implemented scientifically, with the support of experts and specialists in landscaping to select tree species suitable for the Egyptian environment, with a focus on broad-canopy trees that require relatively little water.
He also stressed the importance of involving civil society in protecting and preserving trees, considering it a shared responsibility between executive authorities and citizens, while integrating landscaping efforts into a comprehensive plan to improve quality of life and the city’s appearance, reduce pollution, and enhance the urban environment.
