Cairo Governor Dr. Ibrahim Saber said that in coordination with merchants and shop owners in the historic Khayameya Market area, restoration work was scheduled to take place between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. the following day. The step aims to ensure that the market activity continues and not to close shops during the restoration work. This arrangement will also protect merchants' businesses and livelihoods while preserving the site's historical and architectural significance.
Governor Saber also stated that the restoration project for the Khayameya historic market, located in the Wast Al-Qahira neighborhood, is being funded jointly by the Aga Khan Cultural Services (AKCS-E) Egypt and the ALIPH Foundation, with a budget exceeding EGP 100 million. The eight-month restoration project is expected to conclude in May 2027. The project is a collaborative effort between the Cairo governorate and the Ministries of Tourism and Antiquities and Awqaf.
The project aims to preserve the market’s architectural and historical significance, maintain one of Cairo’s most prominent venues for traditional handicrafts, and revitalize its cultural and economic role while ensuring that this rich heritage is passed on to future generations.
