Before leaving Cairo, Montenegro's President Jakov Milatović, accompanied by his wife and official delegation, toured several landmarks of Historic Cairo, including Bab al-Nasr and Al-Muizz Street, on the sidelines of his official visit to Egypt. It also marks the first presidential-level visit since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Cairo Governor Dr. Ibrahim Saber accompanied the president of Montenegro and his delegation on a tour of Historic Cairo in the presence of Dr. Abdel Aziz Konsowa, minister of higher education and scientific research and acting minister of culture.
During the tour, they sightsee the area's distinctive architectural style and its collection of Islamic monuments, which reflect the deep-rooted Egyptian civilization and highlight the efforts of the Egyptian state to preserve and safeguard its urban and archaeological heritage.
President Jakov Milatović expressed deep admiration for what he saw during the tour, describing Historic Cairo as a world-class cultural treasure that embodies the richness and diversity of Egyptian civilization throughout the centuries. He also praised the Egyptian government's efforts to preserve this exceptional heritage and to make it accessible to visitors from around the world.
Moreover, President Milatović, his wife, and their delegation explored the area—often described as an open-air museum of Islamic architecture—where they were briefed on the histories of numerous mosques, wikalas, and historic residences along Al-Muizz Street. Their itinerary included Bab al-Futuh, one of the three remaining Fatimid gates of Cairo, built in 1087 under Minister Badr al-Jamali, and the Hakim bi-Amr Allah Mosque, one of the largest and oldest Fatimid mosques. They also toured Beit al-Suhaymi, a prime example of an Ottoman-era Cairene house.
Montenegro's President Jakov Milatović, accompanied by his wife and the official delegation, concluded their tour at Khan el-Khalili, one of Cairo's most famous historic bazaars. They browsed traditional handicrafts, handmade goods, and oriental antiques and relaxed at a local café, enjoying the authentic atmosphere and rich cultural heritage of Historic Cairo.
