Under the directives of Dr. Sherif Farouk, Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, to strengthen market oversight and confront all forms of consumer exploitation, the Ministry’s Control and Distribution Sector, along with all supply and internal trade directorates in the governorates, has been instructed to intensify inspection campaigns on tourist and French bakeries producing free-market tourist bread and fino bread. Field inspections will be increased throughout the day to ensure full compliance with Ministerial Directive No. (5) of 2026, which regulates the production and distribution of free-market tourist bread and fino bread and sets their maximum prices.
The Supply Minister confirmed the continued implementation of the ministerial directive, stressing the necessity for all bakeries to comply with the approved weights and prices and not to collect any amounts exceeding the specified prices. He also emphasized the need to display prices and weights in clear and visible locations for citizens, enhancing transparency and protecting consumer rights.
Dr. Sherif Farouk said:“We will not allow any violations or attempts to exploit citizens. Any bakery proven to have violated the approved prices or weights will be dealt with firmly, without exception. The ministry’s authorities will continue their intensive inspection campaigns to ensure full compliance and protect citizens’ rights.”
The minister explained that Ministerial Directive No. (5) of 2026 set the maximum prices for free-market tourist bread as follows:
A loaf weighing 80 grams: 2 Egyptian pounds.
A loaf weighing 60 grams: 1.5 Egyptian pounds.
A loaf weighing 40 grams: 1 Egyptian pound.
It also set the prices for fino bread as follows:
A loaf weighing 50 grams: 2 Egyptian pounds.
A loaf weighing 40 grams: 1.5 Egyptian pounds.
A loaf weighing 30 grams: 1 Egyptian pound.
He confirmed that compliance with these prices and weights is mandatory for all bakeries and that any violation will be handled firmly in accordance with the law.
The Supply Minister stressed that the ministry’s authorities will not tolerate any violations, whether related to selling bread above the approved prices, reducing the required weights, or failing to display prices. He confirmed that immediate and deterrent legal measures will be taken against violators.
Dr. Sherif Farouk also directed the supply and internal trade directorates to fully coordinate with the Supply Police and all relevant authorities to carry out joint and expanded inspection campaigns. He instructed that the ministry be provided with the results of these campaigns continuously and that any serious violations or issues requiring intervention be reported immediately to ensure swift action.
The minister confirmed that the ministry is monitoring the results of inspection campaigns in all governorates in real time and will not allow any practices that harm citizens’ rights or seek to exploit them. He stated that the aim of these campaigns is to ensure citizens receive bread that meets the required quality standards, weights, and prices, while strengthening market discipline, stability, and consumer protection.
Finally, the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade urged citizens who detect any violations of the approved bread weights or prices to immediately report the violating bakeries through the Unified Government Complaints System of the Cabinet via hotline 16528, or through the Consumer Protection Agency complaints hotline 19588.
