Cairo Governor Dr. Ibrahim Saber inspected the bus servicing workshops in Gesr El-Suez, which are affiliated with the Public Transport Authority, to follow up on the workflow and evaluate the available technical and human resources. He also reviewed the ongoing maintenance, refurbishment, and comprehensive renovations being carried out on the authority’s bus fleet.
The governor’s tour aligns with efforts to upgrade the public transportation system, enhance fleet efficiency, and improve the quality of services provided to citizens.
The governor was accompanied by Deputy Governors Asharaf Mansour, Mona El-Batrawi, Ahmad Anwar Attia, and Omar El-Shafaei, along with Dr. Essam Abdel Khaleq, Chairman of Cairo’s Public Transport Authority, and several officials from the Cairo governorate.
During his tour, Saber was briefed on the history and role of the workshops in bus overhauls and renewals. The authority purchased the land in 1964, which spans approximately 69,000 m², to establish specialized bus servicing workshops that were inaugurated in November 1990.
Moreover, Saber reviewed the specialized equipment and resources within the workshops. The workshops offer a comprehensive repair and renewal system, where quality is a central pillar of the operation. Each stage proceeds only after verifying the quality of the finished work. Furthermore, the facility trains new workers in methods that maintain quality standards while increasing production rates.
The governor praised the comprehensive renovations carried out by the Gesr El-Suez workshops and their technical teams as part of efforts to modernize the public transportation system and improve the efficiency of the authority’s fleet. These efforts include integrating maintenance, overhauls, and renewals with upgrades to workshop performance and equipment.
Saber also stated that the Public Transport Authority has always been a main lifeline of transport in the capital, transporting about one million passengers daily through a network of 173 routes, 150 terminal stations, and 2,800 transit stops.
The governor further said it is vital to maximize the use of available technical and human resources within the Gesr El-Suez workshops, increasing production rates while maintaining the quality of repairs and renewals. This step ensures that buses operate more efficiently, extend their service life, and the fleet harnesses its full capacity.
Meanwhile, Essam El-Sheikh stated that the authority’s fleet includes approximately 2,500 buses distributed across 17 garages in Greater Cairo, in addition to around 1,800 minibuses operated by public transport companies’ projects. That supports the public transportation system and provides services across diverse areas, extending geographically from Banha and Al-Qanatar Al-Khairiya in the north to Helwan and Tebbin in the south, and from El-Obour and El-Hikestep in the east to Hawamdeya, Badrashin, and Manshiyat El-Qanatar in the west, as well as serving new urban communities in Greater Cairo.
The Gesr El-Suez bus servicing workshops aim to perform complete refurbishment of around 40 buses per month. This effort contributes to enhancing the technical efficiency of the authority’s fleet, extending the lifespan of the buses, and maximizing the use of existing vehicles by returning them to service after completing repairs, refurbishments, and operational trials.
