Monday,
13 April, will be a paid holiday for private-sector employees in Egypt to mark
Sham El-Nessim, Minister of Labour Hassan El-Raddad announced.
The decision applies
to workers covered by Labour Law No. 14 of 2025 and is in line with Article 129
of the law and Ministerial Decree No. 294 of 2025, which regulates official
holidays.
The ministry said
employers may require staff to work on the day, if necessary, provided
employees receive double pay in addition to their daily wage or are granted a
compensatory day off upon written request.
A circular has been
issued to labor directorates nationwide to ensure the decision is implemented
across workplaces and production sites.
Minister El-Raddad
extended his congratulations to Egyptian workers on the occasion, wishing them
continued success and the country further progress and stability.
Prime Minister Mustafa
Madbouly had already designated Monday, 13 April, as an official paid holiday
for public-sector employees, including ministries, government agencies, public
authorities, local administration units, and state-owned companies, according
to a cabinet statement.
The decision also
applies to public business-sector firms and aligns with the government’s annual
holiday calendar, which typically standardizes observance across both the
public and private sectors.
Sham El-Nessim, one
of Egypt’s oldest national holidays, is celebrated by Egyptians of all
backgrounds to mark the arrival of spring and is traditionally observed on the
Monday following Coptic Easter.
