Egypt’s Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, announced on
Wednesday a rise in the minimum wage by LE 1,000, alongside a 21% expansion of
wage allocations within the state budget. He also noted an “exceptional raise”
targeting teachers and healthcare sector workers.
During a press conference, Madbouly explained that the
wage allocation in the state’s general budget for the upcoming 2026/2027 fiscal
year is 21% higher than the previous year, marking the most significant
increase in recent history.
The Prime Minister indicated that this total increase
encompasses a 15% allowance, in addition to the special increments for
educators and medical personnel. He confirmed that the LE 1,000 increase
applies to the minimum wage, with proportional, gradual increases planned for
other job grades.
Madbouly highlighted the rapid global shifts currently
affecting all nations. He pointed to the steady rise in prices, the
implementation of strict precautionary measures, and widespread production
disruptions. He emphasized that countries worldwide have begun adopting
decisive policies to navigate this "turbulent reality."
The Prime Minister also underscored a critical warning
from the President regarding the targeting of regional energy facilities,
noting that rehabilitating such infrastructure could take years.
Quoting the President, Madbouly stated: “Any targeting
of energy facilities in the region will cost the world years of instability.
While a war may end, the destruction of these facilities means we will wait
years for things to return to normal.” In this regard, the Prime Minister
stressed that Egypt’s stance remains focused on the necessity of ending
regional conflicts due to their profound impact on all aspects of life.
Addressing domestic energy conservation, Madbouly
discussed measures taken to rationalize consumption. He acknowledged the public
discussions and criticisms following the decision to close shops at 9:00 PM.
“We are implementing this as part of a package of
measures introduced gradually,” he explained. “This approach helps the state
maintain control and avoid resorting to more drastic measures from the outset.”
Finally, Madbouly emphasized the importance of
citizens understanding the government’s gradual strategy. In a related move to
manage energy and efficiency, he announced the activation of a "remote
work" (online) system for applicable sectors, starting next Sunday.
