Dust storm and rain forecast as unstable weather sets in Egypt ahead of Eid
18 March 2026
About

Egypt’s Meteorological Authority warned on Tuesday of unstable weather conditions starting today, and extending into Eid Al-Fitr, with rain, dust-laden winds, and reduced visibility expected across much of the country.

The authority said low and medium clouds will bring rain of varying intensity, sometimes thundery, while active winds carrying sand and dust are likely to affect most regions.

Heavier rainfall is forecast over Sinai, the Red Sea Mountains, the Gulf of Suez, and northern Upper Egypt, where it could reach flash-flood levels in some areas. Lighter, intermittent showers may extend to Greater Cairo, the Canal cities, the Delta, the northern coasts, and southern Upper Egypt.

Winds are expected to reach 40–50 km/h, with gusts up to 60–70 km/h, reducing visibility to below 1,000 meters in parts of Upper Egypt and eastern and southern Cairo.

Maritime navigation is also set to be disrupted, with waves of 2.5–4 meters in the Red Sea and Gulf of Suez, and 2.5–3 meters along parts of the Mediterranean coast, including Alexandria and Matrouh.

Temperatures are forecast to rise slightly by 2–3 degrees Celsius despite the unstable conditions.

The authority urged citizens to avoid exposed structures such as trees and billboards, watch for possible flash floods, especially in Sinai and Upper Egypt, and follow regular weather updates as conditions evolve.
