Egypt has completed 42 of 46 planned sanitary
landfills as part of its nationwide reform of the municipal solid waste
management system, Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad
said during a meeting with officials from the Arab Organization for Industrialization
(AOI).
Awad received an AOI delegation headed by Ibrahim
Mahrous, Chairperson of the Arab Company for Real Estate and Tourism Projects,
at the ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital to review
progress on infrastructure projects implemented under Egypt’s integrated waste
management strategy.
According to a ministry statement, the projects
include the construction of fixed and mobile transfer stations, as well as
environmentally compliant sanitary landfills, delivered across multiple
governorates under cooperation agreements between the two sides.
In addition to the 42 completed landfills, 14 mobile
transfer stations and 11 fixed transfer stations have been handed over. The AOI
has also removed approximately 7.1 million tons of accumulated legacy waste
nationwide, in coordination with and funded by the Ministry of Local
Development.
The statement added that a further 80,000 tons of
waste are scheduled to be cleared this year, alongside the completion and
delivery of four additional facilities.
Awad noted that Egypt has made tangible progress in
recent years in modernizing its solid waste management system, including the
establishment of sanitary landfills, transfer stations, recycling facilities
and waste treatment plants. She also highlighted the expansion of
private-sector participation as a key driver in enhancing operational
efficiency and promoting environmental sustainability.
She stressed the importance of completing the
remaining projects within the set timelines, particularly transfer stations and
landfill sites, while continuing efforts to eliminate historical waste
accumulations. These steps, she said, are essential to strengthening
infrastructure, improving environmental sanitation and enhancing citizens’
quality of life.
