Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources
Karim Badawy participated in the official ceremony marking Cyprus’s
assumption of the rotating presidency of the European Union, which began at the
start of January.
The ceremony was held in the Cypriot capital, Nicosia,
in the presence of Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, heads of state,
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit,
Secretary-General of the Arab League, and several prominent international and
regional figures.
Badawy emphasized that Egypt’s participation in this
event reflects the strength of the robust ties between Egypt and
Cyprus.
Partnering in regional natural gas interconnection
between the two countries is at the forefront of cooperation areas and has
witnessed continuous progress recently, he added, successfully transforming
interconnection ideas and projects into agreements and practical steps.
The minister added that Egypt is a key partner
for Cyprus, particularly in strengthening regional cooperation and integration
to achieve energy security – especially given Egypt’s pivotal role as a hub for
supplying European markets with energy and the ambitious projects it is leading
in this field.
On the sidelines of the celebration, Badawy met with
his Cypriot counterpart, Michalis Damianos, where they affirmed their support
for continuing joint integrated work within energy and natural gas resource
development to achieve shared interests.
The Egyptian delegation also met with officials from
the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Cyprus in
Nicosia, as part of ongoing coordination and joint efforts between working
groups from both sides to expedite the implementation of agreed-upon natural
gas projects.
Strategic cooperation was discussed to advance
priority joint projects, including linking Cypriot gas fields to Egyptian
infrastructure and facilities for re-export via Egypt to European markets.
Both sides emphasized the importance of continued
technical coordination in the near future and holding regular meetings to
monitor the implementation of agreements, thereby achieving shared interests
and strengthening the significant position of both countries within the energy
sector.
