Egypt’s
National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) has ordered a precautionary recall of
limited batches of infant formula produced by Nestlé Egypt after traces of a
bacterial toxin were detected in a raw material used in manufacturing.
The authority said that
the recall followed a voluntary request by Nestlé after tests found cereulide—a
toxin produced by Bacillus cereus—in arachidonic acid (ARA) oil used in
production. Exposure to the toxin can cause nausea and severe vomiting,
particularly in children.
The recall applies
to specific batches of Nan Comfort 1 and Nan OptiPro 1 infant formula produced
in 2025, with expiry dates in 2026 and 2027, the NFSA said.
The affected batches
are:
Nan Comfort 1 (Batch
51510346AC)
Nan OptiPro 1
(Batches 51370346AA, 52650346AA, 51460346AB, 51460346AA)
The recall took
effect on 7 January 2026. Suppliers and distributors have been instructed to
immediately stop circulating products bearing the specified batch numbers,
while the authority said it is overseeing implementation in coordination with
the company.
Consumers were
advised to check batch numbers on product packaging, stop using any affected
products, and dispose of them safely. The NFSA said further updates would be
issued through its official channels.
The authority said
the move was precautionary and aimed at protecting public health, particularly
infant safety.
Established by
parliament in 2017, the NFSA is responsible for regulating food safety in
Egypt, including the inspection and licensing of food products for domestic
production, import, and export.
