About

Dr. Khaled El-Enany, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, followed olio on the restoration work of Mohammed Ali Mosque and the Clock Tower in the Citadel of Saladin in Cairo. He was accompanied by Dr. Mustafa Waziri, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Brigadier General Hisham Samir, Assistant Minister of Tourism and Antiquities for Engineering Affairs, Dr. Osama Talat, Head of the Islamic, Coptic and Jewish Antiquities Sector of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, and Dr. Nevin Nizar, Assistant to the Minister for Museum Affairs.

Dr. Mustafa Waziri said that restoration was carried out by a team of restorers from the Supreme Council of Antiquities.

Work in the Clock Tower began in December 2020, after completing the necessary archaeological studies and review of the old pictures and drawings. The calibration of the clock machine is now under its way to adjust its time.

The clock in the tower was given to Muhammad Ali Pasha from King Louis Philippe of France in 1846 to be placed in the Palace of Muhammad Ali Pasha in Shubra, and was stored in the palace until it was settled upon for it to be placed in the mosque during the reign of Khedive Abbas I in 1856.
