Minister of Supply
and Internal Trade Ali Moselhi announced on Tuesday that a higher committee
will be formed in the upcoming days to monitor the prices of bread in light of
changes in flour prices.
He pointed out that
the committee, which will meet monthly, will determine the price, weight, and
quality of bread.
According to the
ministry's statement, flour prices have decreased by around 35 percent,
dropping from EGP 28 to EGP 18 per kilogram, following the US dollar flows into
Egypt and the customs releases that took place recently.
The ministry will
also help bakeries obtain the necessary licenses to operate freely and under
the direct supervision of the ministry.
On Monday,
governorates started receiving local wheat from farmers nationwide, setting
their sights on collecting 3.5 million tons of the staple crop during the 2024
wheat supply season.
Egypt’s total
consumption of wheat amounts to around 18 million tons annually, half of which
goes to producing subsidized bread.
