Cairo Governor discusses "Bescletta" Project to reduce traffic congestion

Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal and Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN HABITAT) Rania Hedeya met on Wednesday to discuss the implementation of the "Bescletta" Project, which is a system promoting the use of bicycles as an alternative means of transportation in the capital.

 

The governor said that the state seeks to encourage citizens to replace the use of private cars with bicycles to help to ease traffic congestion and reduce pollution, adding that Cairo always strives to benefit from global transportation experiences to reduce pollution.

 

For her part, Rania Hedeya noted that the bicycle sharing system is the technology of placing bikes in stations throughout the city, which enables residents to rent bicycles from place (A) and then leave the bike in place (B) pointing out that the system has been experienced around the world and has proven its success in encouraging the use of non-motorized transportation.        

 

Hedeya also added that the procedures of operating and supplying of bicycle sharing system " Bescletta" has been completed and would be applied in its first phase in the Downtown area.
