2 April 2023
About

Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal announced Sunday that the capital began the second round of the National Initiative for Green Smart Projects launched by the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development under the auspices of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi as part of Egypt’s pivotal role and effort to localize sustainable development goals.

Abdel Aal said that the registration would be open from April 1 to May 30, 2023, via the website of the initiative, adding that it is an unprecedented initiative reflecting Egypt’s interest in the climate change issue and environmental dimension in the framework of achieving sustainable development goals, digital transformation, and national strategy for climate change 2025 through submitting projects fulfilling these goals.

Moreover, Abdel Aal pointed out that the initiative aims to create a state of social and motivational mobility across Cairo within the framework of empowering the private sector, women, and young people to emphasize the importance of green smart projects in all aspects.

The initiative targets various fields, including projects taking into account environmental sustainability standards that reduce carbon emissions and preserve natural resources, projects that enhance energy and resources efficiency, projects that aim to solve food security and water security issues, biodiversity, and environmental system services which contribute to adapting to climate change.

The initiative includes green smart projects in six categories: large projects, medium-sized projects, small-scale domestic projects (as part of Decent Life Initiative), projects by start-ups, not-for-profit community activities, and gender-related, climate change- and sustainability-focused projects.

The national committee for the green smart projects initiative, headed by the Ministry of Planning, consists of several ministries and concerned authorities such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of International Cooperation, Ministry of Communications, Ministry of Local Development, and National Council for Women. The committee is to ensure integration among all state sectors in tackling climate change.
