Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism & Antiquities begins restoration works of Saray al-Qubba’s archaeological granite column
In coordination with Egypt’s Presidential Office, the
Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has started a project to restore, and
assemble the granite column located in Saray al-Qubba Park, shedding light on
its historical and archaeological value.
This project comes within the state’s efforts to renovate
the Egyptian squares to show the beauty of their architectural design, and
develop public parks.
Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities
Mustafa Waziri said that the restorers and archaeologists of the council began
on September 29 removing the dirt and calcifications that had accumulated on
the column over time due to erosion factors.
According to Waziri, they will also implement the necessary
strengthening and consolidation work to reinstall the column in the middle of
the garden, to better highlight its aesthetic value.
It is worth noting that this column was carved from pink
granite during the New Kingdom. It has a cylindrical shape with a palm-frond
crown that folds outward. The height of the column is approximately 8 m, and
the height of the crown is about 82 cm.
