5 September 2022
About

Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal met with the delegation of the Green Cities Program launched by the European Bank for Reconstruction and development as part of the Cairo governorate’s participation in the program to coordinate the green city action plan.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Director of Green Cities Program Lin O'Grady, Associate Director Christina Teokari, Bank Assistant for Sustainable Infrastructure Department Nada El-Shafaai, and Assistant Secretary-General Ibrahim Awad.

During the meeting, Cairo Governor stressed Egypt’s keenness to implement the green cities program within the framework of the state’s interest in climate change and ahead of hosting the Climate Change Conference COP27 next November in Sharm El-Sheikh city.

In this context, the Egyptian state has taken accelerated steps to eliminate informal settlements, establish waste recycling factories, construct sanitary landfills, raise awareness about cleanliness, and increase green spaces, the governor said.

The action plan discussed by the two sides includes that the EBRD supports the Cairo governorate by providing international consultants to identify priority fields to implement the program, especially in upgrading green infrastructure, including solid waste management, sewerage system, urban roads, eco-friendly means of transport, and energy efficiency in public buildings, renewable energy, and energy efficiency in power infrastructure.

In July 2019, the Cairo governorate joined the EBRD Green Cities program and signed a memorandum of understanding with the EBRD in April 2021 under the auspices of the Ministry of Investment.
