Ministers of Awqaf, Antiquities, Cairo Governor inaugurate Al-Shafi'i Mausoleum after restoration
Minister of Awqaf Mokhtar Gomaa, Minister
of Tourism and Antiquities Khaled Al-Anani, and Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal
inaugurated today the newly-resorted Mausoleum and Dome of Al-Imam Al-Shafi'i in
Al-Khalifa suburb.
Al-Imam Al-Shafi'i Mausoleum and Dome
is known for its distinctive architectural and decorative elements as well as
its historical and spiritual value.
The restoration project of Al-Imam
Al-Shafi'i Mausoleum and Dome included masonry walls and floors, marble, and
ceramic mosaic conservation.
The work included grouting,
consolidation, crack repair, replacement of damaged brick and stone, repair of
marble cladding, ceramic mosaic dismantling and refixing, and installing a
glass walkway above it.
Moreover, the dome was restored from
inside and outside, a new drainage system was installed, and a modern lighting
system was designed to be consistent with the historical value of the dome.
The inauguration was
attended by Secretary-General of Supreme Council of Antiquities Mustafa Waziri,
Director of Cairo's Religious Endowment Directorate Khaled Khedr, and US Ambassador
to Egypt Jonathan Cohen.
